After the phenomenal Xiaomi Mi 8 launch party in China, the company had announced a special edition smartphone to the Mi 8 lineup later that day. The company decided to call it the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. Finally, after a lot of design speculations and renders gliding on the Internet, Mr. Donovan Sung, the Director of Product Management and Marketing, Xiaomi Global had put out the subsequent images on his personal Facebook ID. Once again, the images do not come from an official reference but were shared by a company official over facebook. Here is how the new smartphone crush of the tech community looks like-
The device (see above pictures) has a clear transparent background which has been in high speculation in the tech community.
How does the Mi 8 differ from the Mi 8 Explorer Edition?
Well, apart from the transparent back panel in the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, of course, there are a mild few specification changes in the Explorer Edition when put in competition with the Mi 8. When we put the specification of the device side-by-side, we get to see that not a lot is different under that transparent hood.
Both of the variants possess a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2248 x 1080 and an 18.7:9 screen ratio. Both the Mi 8 and the Mi 8 Explorer Edition are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa-Core chipset which looks a lot appealing on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition’s transparent back. Both have got an Adreno 630 GPU satisfying their graphics needs. Something that has developed here is the storage and RAM configuration. The Xiaomi Mi 8 runs on a 6GB RAM variant with storage options varying from 64GB, 128GB and even 256GB whereas the Explorer Edition of the same has 8GB RAM coupled with a fixed choice of 128GB internal memory.
The rear and the front camera setup is precisely the same. The rear is, of course, a dual camera setup and the specifications of the both the devices are as follows-
- Primary Lens: 12MP with 1.4 micron pixels, 4-axis OIS, f/1.8 aperture
- Secondary Lens: 12MP telephoto with 1.0 micron pixels, f/2.4 aperture
- Video Capabilities: 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 240/120/30fps, 720p at 240/30fps
And the front camera is a 20MP shooter with 1.8 micron pixels with an aperture of f/2.0 for great low-light selfies.
Both have got USB Type-C and bottom firing speakers. Also, the 3.5mm headphone jack has been made absent. Another difference between the two devices is the battery capacity. The Mi 8 holds a battery pack of 3,400 mAh and the Mi 8 Explorer Edition holds a little less- a 3,000 mAh battery. Both of them are non-removable and support Xiaomi’s Quick Charge 4.0. The Xiaomi Mi 8 has been programmed with Infrared Face Recognition whereas the Mi 8 Explorer Edition has got the 3D Facial Recognition.
Another star highlight of the device states that the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition has an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Although, this isn’t the case with the Mi 8 which has the fingerprint reader on the back. The Explorer edition is 2 grams heavier and the back is transparent.
The device has probably completed its testing stage and is not ready to go out in the wild. Although, I strongly feel that this device would be a limited edition and would be extremely endangered in quantity.
Also, fun fact, according to a study done by Indian Express, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is not the only transparent-like gadget in the market! There have been plenty already!
